Juan F. Batlle, M.D. traveled to the United States from the Dominican Republic to present at the 40th Annual Alumni Meeting for Ophthalmology at Suny Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York on Thursday, June 7, 2012. Dr. Battle presentation topic was “Pterygium Surgery with Amniotic Membrane”. His presentation covered the use of adjuvants to reduce the recurrence rate of Pterygium after surgery. He highlighted the use of Mitomycin-C, autografts, and amniotic membranes as solutions. Dr. Batlle also discussed the history of amniotic membrane and the events that led to the current technology, a dry, preserved and pre-packaged membrane.
Juan F. Batlle, M.D. practices at Centro Laser, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He interned at Duke University Medical Center performed his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Batlle is a recent contributor of a chapter in Dr. John Hovanesian’s book, Pterygium Techniques and Technologies for Surgical Success, regarding the history of amniotic membrane.
